ASSIGNMENTS / GRADING


Ten 200 word reports of the readings. 50 pts.

Have you read the reading assigned for the week? Prove it with a short 200 word report on the reading. Turn it in before the class for an easy 5 points. Where there are two readings assigned, write on one or the other, or both if you prefer. I will accept up to ten such reports from each student over the course of the 12 weeks.

 

One 1000 word essay. 25 pts.

Write a 1000 word essay on one of the topics below. Clearly state a position on the topic and supply a positive argument for that position. Also, consider carefully at least one argument against your position. Include a brief paragraph in which you introduce the topic and state your claim. Your paper must be between 900 and 1100 words to be accepted. Papers are due at the final class. You may write in the first person.

a. What makes a good action good? Answer with reference to the Euthyphro. Defend your answer. Consider one or more objection.

b. Am I justified in believing that the sun will rise tomorrow? Answer with reference to Hume. Defend your answer. Consider one or more objection.

c. Is it OK to believe without sufficient evidence? Which is the more important, to believe what is true or to avoid error? Defend your answer. Consider one or more objection.

d.  Does God exist? Defend your answer. Consider one or more objection.

e. Are we free? Defend your answer. Consider one or more objection.

 

One test or a second essay. 25 pts.

The test, if you choose to write it, will be written the week after the final class. It will include 10 multiple choice questions (20%), 5 short answer questions (50%), and one short essay question (30%). Further details TBA. 

The second 1000 word essay should be on one of the above topics according to the above instructions. This essay, if you choose to write it, will be due one week after the final class.
